Asphalt prices logged another large monthly gain, increasing 9.8% from July to August, while steel prices rose 2% over the same period for the tenth straight monthly hike, according to the August Producer Price Index (PPI).

Lumber prices increased 0.6% in August. Concrete declined slightly (0.1%).

Over the last year, steel prices are up 40.8% and asphalt has increased 46.6%. Concrete prices are up 3.6%, and lumber prices are down 5%.

Cement Intensities

Cement Intensity is the ratio of the amount of cement used per inflation-adjusted expenditures for construction put-in-place. Cement use is measured in metric tons. Nominal construction put-in-place expenditures are adjusted to $2000 real dollars.

Effective promotion activities will drive up cement intensities, all other factors held constant. However, changes in relative prices for competitive material, and changes in the sectoral and geographical distribution of construction will also affect cement intensity. Any of these factor effects can be either positive or negative relative to cement intensity.
