Dr. John Kevern is a Senior Researcher at the National Laboratory of the Rockies. In 2006, he was selected as a recipient of a J. P. Gleason Fellowship. Under the direction of Kejin Wang and Vernon Schaefer at Iowa State University, his project was “The Effect of Coarse Aggregate on the Freeze-thaw Durability of Pervious Concrete,” where he comprehensively studied how the mineralogy, gradation, and particle shape affected freeze-thaw performance, mixture proportions, strength, permeability, and ultimate yield of a variety of aggregates from across the U.S. and Canada on pervious concrete.
At the National Laboratory of the Rockies, Dr. Kevern’s responsibilities include acting as deputy director for the Department of Energy’s Center of Excellence for the Acceleration and Advancement of Next Generation Cement and Concrete Engineering Technologies (ACCENT). As the chair of the American Concrete Institute’s 522 Pervious Concrete Committee and involvement, he continues to guide industry development for improved guidance for pervious concrete. On other ACI, ASTM International, and ASCE committees for curing, sustainability, and cold climates, he advances the translation of impactful emerging technologies to impact concrete applications and improve our infrastructure. Dr. Kevern has been named one of the top five most influential people in the concrete industry by Concrete Construction Magazine, received the ACI Walter P. Moore Jr. Faculty Achievement and Young Member Award for Professional Achievement Awards, and is a Fellow of both ACI and ASCE.
