Lesley Sneed, Ph.D.
Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Illinois Chicago (UIC)
2005 Recipient
Dr. Lesley Sneed is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). In 2005, she was selected as a recipient of a J. P. Gleason Fellowship. Under the direction of Julio Ramirez at Purdue University, her project was “Effect of Member Depth on the Shear Strength of Reinforced Concrete Flexural Members,” where she investigated the “size effect in shear”.
At UIC, Dr. Sneed’s research interests include the shear and torsional behavior of concrete structures, repair and strengthening of structures, and evaluation of existing structures. She is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute and serves on several technical committees including ACI Committee 318, Structural Concrete Building Code, which is the primary code used by designers in the U.S. and around the world for concrete construction. Dr. Sneed has been involved with student oversight for Fellowship recipients at UIC and other institutions, helping to guide them as she was guided for her own research project.
Dr. Sneed is currently on detail at the U.S. National Science Foundation, where she is serving as a program director (rotator) for the Engineering for the Built Environment program within the Directorate for Engineering. The program supports fundamental research on civil infrastructure and civil infrastructure systems, from materials to global networks, for prosperous, resilient, and safe communities.
