Stephen Stacey is an Associate Principal and Co-Founder of Durability Engineers, a concrete consulting firm in Chicago, IL. As an expert in concrete durability, he specializes in on-site investigations and repair design. His expertise is in determining the causes of failures in concrete materials, with a focus on nondestructive evaluation and understanding deleterious reactions and volume instabilities in concrete.
Mr. Stacey’s 2014 Fellowship was on “An accelerated and more accurate test method to ASTM C1293: The Concrete Cylinder Test.” The project focused on improving and refining the concrete cylinder test (CCT) as an accelerated method for evaluating alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and as a potential approach for testing actual project mixture proportions. The findings from the fellowship research were published and presented at the 15th International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction in Concrete in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2016. The resulting paper, “An Accelerated and More Accurate Test Method to ASTM C1293: The Concrete Cylinder Test,” was co-authored with Kevin J. Folliard, Thano Drimalas, and Michael D. A. Thomas.
Mr. Stacey’s current work focuses on the investigation and repair of concrete structures throughout the United States and internationally. His projects include condition assessments, nondestructive testing, durability evaluations, laboratory investigations, repair design, and construction-phase support for industrial, transportation, energy, defense, and other critical infrastructure.
